- How far in advance should I place my concrete order?
A minimum of 24 hours notice is required for timely delivery.
Weekend deliveries should be scheduled 2-3 days in advance during peak "home
improvement" construction season.
- How far in advance should I schedule equipment rentals?
Small tool rentals only require a phone call, however; large equipment
rentals should be scheduled at least 1 week in advance when possible.
- What is the term "slump" pertain to concrete. What
is slump?
The term slump simply refers to the consistency of the concrete prior to
hardening. Slump is a measure of how wet or stiff the concrete is.
- How can I avoid cracks in my concrete?
There are many reasons why concrete cracks. Cracks rarely affect structural
integrity. The majority of concrete cracks usually occur due to improper design and
construction practices, such as: omission of isolation & control joints, improper
jointing practices, improper subgrade preparation, the use of high slump (very wet)
concrete or addition of water on the job, improper finishing and inadequate or curing.
Concrete "shrinks" slightly as it hardens, therefore; proper spacing of joints
are most important.
- Why should fresh concrete be properly cured?
The surface of freshly placed concrete should be kept moist for at least 7
days. Proper curing will minimize the potential of cracking. The simplest method of moist
curing is wetting the surface of the concrete, then covering it with plastic.
- What causes scaling and surface shrinkage?
These defects are generally a result of improper finishing of the concrete.
If excess water is added to the surface of the concrete during placement and finishing,
the water/cement ratio on the surface may be drastically increased.
- What is fiber mesh?
Fiber mesh is typically polypropylene (plastic) fibers introduced into the
mix during the batching process. These fibers serve as a secondary reinforcement in the
concrete. In most cases, fibers can replace welded wire fabric as a means of secondary
reinforcement.
- What kind of deicer or salt should I use on my concrete?
The use of deicers/salts on concrete should be strictly prohibited as they
rapidly attach and disintegrate concrete. The extent of disintegration depends on the
amount of deicer/salt used and the frequency of application.
- Since Stambaugh's, Inc. performs asphalt paving, does Stambaugh's, Inc.
recommend concrete or asphalt driveways?
A properly placed concrete driveway has a much longer life expectancy than an
asphalt driveway. A concrete driveway is much cooler in the summer months. Residue from an
asphalt driveway can potentially be tracked into your home. This problem does not occur
with a concrete driveway.
- Does Stambaugh's, Inc. pave both driveways and roadways?
Due to the current workload, Stambaugh's, Inc. does not perform residential
driveway asphalt paving. However, they do have a list of Paving Contractors for reference.
Stambaugh's, Inc. performs commercial paving only.
- Does Stambaugh's, Inc. seal asphalt driveways?
Again, due to the workload, Stambaugh's, Inc. refers all requests for
driveway sealing to other qualified subcontractors.
